Gold Filled Material / Jewelry Care

About Gold Filled Material

Gold-fill is a great alternative to solid gold jewelry. It's a pressure bonded layer of gold that has 100x more gold than plated and does not tarnish as easily. These characteristics make it a beautiful, durable, and economical alternative to solid gold, that will last years if cared for properly and therefore we do NOT recommend you wear them in the shower, bath, swimming pool, or ocean. If you forget to take it off and shower with it, no worries nothing will happen, just rinse off the soap and pat dry completely right away.

14k Gold-Filled: waterproof & perfect for every day. Gold-filled is your best option after solid gold for quality and durability. It will not flake off or turn your skin green, and offers a great option for people with sensitive skin.

How it's made: To make gold-fill jewelry, multiple layers of solid gold are pressure-bonded to a core of high-quality jeweller’s brass using extreme heat. The result is a thick layer of real gold and a durable, long-lasting product.

Great for sensitive skin: 99.9% of people find they have no sensitivity to gold-filled jewelry. The outside of the piece is solid 14k gold, therefore, it interacts with your skin in the same way solid 14k gold would.  If you do not have any sensitivities to solid gold, you will find gold-filled agrees well with your skin.

Gold-filled jewelry can stay beautiful for a lifetime, especially with a little care.

Gold-filled jewelry supplies are in the US legally required to be 5% or 1/20 gold by weight. This 5% is described by the karat of the gold alloy on the surface. Most material is 12kt or 14kt gold-filled. 12k and 18k gold fillings are less thick but still have a very thin layer of gold (1/24th and 1/36th of an inch respectively).

Is gold-filled the same as gold plated?

No. The plating does not compose any measurable proportion of the product's total weight. It is estimated to be 0.05% or less of the metal product. Gold plating can wear off quickly and expose the brass base product. It does not stand up to heat, water or wear over time. By comparison, gold-filled contains 5% gold by weigh. All the gold is on the surface which offers product protection from tarnish and wear.

Can gold-filled tarnish?

In some cases, yes it can, but it is rare. Gold-filled jewelry supplies are a long time product because the gold layer bonded to the brass core is quite thick. Gold-filled usually just requires light surface cleaning with an untreated cloth or mild soapy water like Dawn. Please store your fashion Jewelry in a dry place. Gemstone Jewelry and beaded Gemstone Jewelry needs little to no maintenance if taken care properly.

Jewelry Care Instructions

Due to the delicate nature of each POSHMIRA jewelry piece, we highly recommend to extend the life of your Jewelry please avoid showering, swimming, heavy duty workouts, applying lotions and sprays while wearing your PM Jewelry. Water, sweat, and sprays/perfumes can cause silver to tarnish quickly. If your necklace gets wet, it will not ruin it, but drying it as soon as possible is very helpful. Our designs are created with semi precious and precious gems with natural inclusions and depending on the hardness of a stone, yes, larger stones can break if dropped on hard surface.

Please do NOT store your jewelry in the bathroom. Always store your jewelry in a dry place. The best way to store jewelry is using jewelry boxes or pouches.

Gold-filled Jewelry can be cleaned, but you should only need to occasionally. It rarely tarnishes in fact it tarnishes only if in touch with cremes, lotions, perfumes or chemicals. Mild soapy water and a child’s soft toothbrush with a drop of a mild detergent (i,E, DAWN) is the perfect combination for cleaning gold-filled  jewelry.  Our bodies perspire, which can cause build up on jewelry. Gently rub the jewelry with a soft, dry tissue to remove debris. The detergent can remove residue or fingerprints from the item, and still leave it  shiny and bright when it’s done. Be sure the toothbrush is soft or it may scratch your piece! Soft cloth – using a clean, soft cotton cloth is an ideal way to dry and polish your gold-filled pieces. A soft cloth will not scratch the item.
